What Makes Crown Prices Vary So Much?

A porcelain crown quote can swing by $800 or more in the same city — and both quotes might be completely legitimate. Here's what's actually driving the difference.

The single biggest variable is material. Full porcelain and zirconia crowns cost more than porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) because the material and lab work are more expensive. If your dentist quotes you for a crown without specifying the material, ask. A $900 quote for a PFM and a $1,400 quote for full zirconia aren't comparable — they're different products.

The second major factor is the lab fee. Most dentists send crowns to an outside dental laboratory for fabrication. Lab fees vary considerably — domestic labs cost more than offshore labs, and premium labs charge a premium for their work. Some practices include the lab fee in their quote; others add it separately. Always ask whether the lab fee is included.

A core buildup (D2950) is a separate procedure sometimes needed to rebuild a tooth before the crown can be placed. Not every tooth needs one, but if yours does and it wasn't in the original quote, expect an additional $150–$350 charge. Ask upfront whether your tooth will need a buildup.

Finally, practice overhead plays a role. A dental practice in a high-rent downtown location with the latest digital crown technology (CEREC same-day crowns) will typically charge more than a suburban general dentist using a traditional two-appointment workflow. Neither is inherently better or worse — they're different service models.

What to Watch For

A crown quote significantly below the market range for your area warrants a conversation, not a celebration. Ask what material is being used. Ask about the lab. A genuinely low price can indicate an offshore lab, a material shortcut, or a practice building volume at thin margins — which is fine if you know that going in.
